We had to wait for more than five hours at the India Immigration checkpoint, which was quite frustrating. The office is not well-equipped, with limited seating for the number of people passing through. The process felt slow and unorganized. I strongly recommend increasing the number of agents to improve efficiency and reduce wait times. A better waiting area with more seating would also make the experience more comfortable for travelers.

Queued 3-5 hrs each time. Hopefully there's a upgrade and they start to have computers instead of manual handwriting.... Poor workers. Didn't even have basic IT support.
The toilet is even nicer than their office.

During the 2026 New Year, I traveled from Nepal to India. The border crossing took only 20 minutes as there were no queues. It was an incredibly exciting experience.

Being an indian i got my passport stamped and was given priority before everyone else, line was huge and you can expect delays for hours, specially foreigners.
Do not pay bribe to anyone guys (advise for foreigners), staff was cooperative.

The tall police officer with a mustache and the lady working here were the most terrible people I encountered during my time in India. She yelled at me asking weird questions and every answer she laughed about it and spoke in her native language with the other officer as if I was lying to her. The officer stamped my passport and hit my passport on the table staring at me with a mad face. I did nothing wrong and my visa cost 50 us, terrible behavior of these people working here with tourists. They have to learn from Nepal because I crossed the border and even had a "welcome to Nepal, enjoy our country"!

Not a great place to stand in a queue. But yes, the verification process is simple. Just have a valid original ID like Citizenship, Aadhar or passport(my suggestion would be to go in with your citizenship, no questions asked with my case) with you and thats a you'll need.

This Indian immigration Check Post (Sonauli) must be reorganized, staff work there so slow, there is no room for tourists, people need to get Q lines for passport stamps... It's just look like a flea market not immigration office. Nothing changes after 23 years, only changes is the location.
