The world's highest post office visit with friends in -16 was thrilling experience. The letter to be sent from Hikkim to friends and family felt too good. Mail from here is typically carried on foot by postal runners to Kaza, and then enters the regular postal network.

We visited the Post Office almost close to closing time but they made sure we got the time to actually send the post cards. The staff was helpful and made sure we were informed that the letter or post card might not be delivered, but guess what! A few weeks later the post office actually did deliver the same! I cannot feel more excited about the same! So if you are into that sort of old school memorabilia, please do visit!

Such a unique experience! Visiting the world's highest post office in Hikkim was really special. It's a small place but full of charm. I got to send a postcard from there, it felt like sending a message from the top of the world! The people are friendly, and it's amazing to see how this post office still runs in such a remote area. Definitely worth a visit if you're in Spiti.

Visiting the Hikkim Post Office is like stepping into a piece of living history -- and mailing a postcard from here is an experience you'll never forget. Located at 4,400 meters (14,567 ft) above sea level, this post office holds the title of the highest functioning post office in the world. Despite its humble size and structure -- just a small building tucked away in a quiet Spiti Valley village -- it's become an iconic stop for travelers with a sense of adventure and nostalgia. Pro Tips : 1. Carry cash -- no digital payments here. 2. Altitude can be intense for some, so take it slow and stay hydrated. 3. Best season to visit: May to October (in winter, the post office is usually closed due to heavy snow). A must-visit for travelers who love depth, stories, and simple magic.

Hikkim: A Unique High-Altitude Escape -- Review Location & Vibe Perched high in Himachal Pradesh's Lahaul and Spiti district at about 4,400 m (14,400 ft), Hikkim is one of India's highest permanently inhabited villages . Surrounded by stillness, prayer flags, and rustic stone-and-mud houses, the village exudes a serene, off-grid charm . Main Attraction: The World's Highest Post Office Hikkim's post office, housed in the postmaster's residence, is the village's beating heart. Established in 1983, Postmaster Rinchen Chhering has faithfully run the operation ever since, with occasional help from an assistant or two . As cell coverage and internet are virtually non-existent, this humble PO connects locals--and curious visitors--to the world beyond the mountains . Dedicated postmen even walk the mail on foot 20-23 km to nearby Kaza . Visitor Experience: Postcards from the Roof of the World Tourist joy: Sending postcards from Hikkim is a cherished memory for many--some even report delivery within 2 weeks! Best Time to Visit & Practical Tips When to go: Summer (May-September) is ideal--roads are open, skies clear, and landscapes accessible. Winters are harsh, isolating the region for 5-6 months . How to reach: From Kaza, it's a 15-16 km journey via steep, narrow roads--accessible by jeep or taxi, but demanding caution . Bring essentials: Cash is essential--no ATMs or UPI. Carry warm layers, water, and your own postcards if you want better options than what's available locally .
